LEGENDS Episode 203 "The Legend of Curtis Ballard" Summary & Brief Review

Official synopsis: It's a race against time as Martin searches for Kate in Paris. He's convinced the peaceful protest she's attending may turn violent at the hands of her friend Ifti, a boy with radical beliefs. In 2001 Prague, Dmitry discovers that the key to getting close to Doku Zakayev (Visar Vishka) may not be his brother Tamir (Nikola Djuricko), but instead Doku's wife, Ilyana. In 1991 Lithuania, a younger Ballard is involved in an incident that will affect the rest of his life.
http://www.tntdrama.com/shows/legends/season-2/episode-3/the-legend-of-curtis-ballard.html

SPOILERS AHEAD!!
Because of the unplanned delay of this episode due to the nature of its content in relation to the real tragedy of terrorist attacks in Paris, it's been 2 weeks since episode 2, so let's recap what is happening with Martin in the present time. He has discovered he had a relationship with a young woman, Kate Crawford, that began years ago when Martin, an MI6 agent posing as Russian mobster Dmitry Petrovich, was in pursuit of a war criminal general, believed to have ties to Chechen gangster Doku Zakayev. Martin had decided to befriend Kate's mother Ilyana in order to get inside Doku's organisation. After getting nowhere with Ilyana in the present, he connected with Kate, and in the process, found her mixed up with young Muslim students planning to do violence at a peaceful protest in Paris. Martin feared she could get hurt so he asked his former partner Tony Rice for help getting into France. However, Tony's MI6 & CIA contacts aren't happy about that, especially when the tip he gave them about a terrorist didn't pan out.
Episode 3 opens with Martin & Tony successfully getting into France and are on the way to Paris when they are intercepted by French police. They ditch one car for another, do some fancy driving and avoid capture. But then Tony decides to split up, let Martin get to Paris alone while Tony draws attention.

In Paris, Martin quickly finds the address he found in Ifti's apartment and tells Ifti's parents that he is her stepfather and that Ifti plans some kind of violence, to call police. Ifti's father goes with Martin to the square where the protest is taking place, but they are too late. Just as Martin reaches Kate, Ifti opens fire on the crowd, people are hit, and he is killed by return fire from police. Kate is wounded and Martin hastens to get her away from the terrible scene before the police can act.

Other flashbacks depict how "Dmitry" and his MI6 handler Graves made more surveillance plans and how Dmitry acted to befriend Ilyana and her little girl Katya, who is present day Kate.

The remainder of this episode focused on the origins of titular Curtis Ballard, the FBI agent that chased Dmitry and is now chasing Martin. Curtis was shown as a teen employed in Lithuania as a Mormon missionary, and not too happy about it. One rebellious act after another led to a tragedy: his friend was killed in a dispute over paying whores. It was that act that decided Curtis on a path to law enforcement & the FBI, He wanted to make a difference now, in this life.
The depiction of shooting violence on a peaceful crowd was very graphic, and I fully understand why TNT chose to delay the broadcast of this episode. My deepest condolences to terrorist victims' families.
But I also think it's important for people to see how such violence can happen, why one must be vigilant of surroundings. I continue to enjoy Sean's depth of character with Dmitry and Martin, and now I see why sticking with just 2 legends in Series 2 was a good idea. I've seen some dissatisfaction with the rapid jumping of timelines, but I've been able to track all the people and Martin's just fine so far. For example, Gabi's current husband was her superior in the past, and is also in with Doku's mob.

LEGENDS Episode 202 "The Legend of Kate Crawford" Summary & Brief Review

Official synopsis: In present day London, Martin is finally able to make contact with Ilyana Crawford (Klara Issova), a woman who may be linked to his past. Unable to get answers from her, he turns to her teenage daughter, Kate (Aisling Franciosi), who is in search of her own identity. In 2001 Prague, Dmitry is on a mission to locate a wanted war criminal believed to be connected to the Chechen gangsters. But Dmitry's handler is concerned that his infiltration techniques may be crossing the line.
http://www.tntdrama.com/shows/legends/season-2/episode-2/the-legend-of-kate-crawford.html

SPOILERS AHEAD!!
In the present time, Martin got away from the police and was finally able to confront Ilyana Crawford, the woman who recognised him as Dmitry at the Russian market and is the mother of Kate, the young woman whom Martin thinks he remembers being with when she was a little girl. But Ilyana was frightened, told him to leave & never come back.
Distressed, Martin tells Tony that he's going to have to make contact with Kate, to try and get some more answers. Tony isn't so sure that's a good idea, but Martin goes ahead & does it. They speak, Kate eventually tells Martin that she loved Dmitry when he was with her as a little girl, and hugs him.
Martin wants to meet her again to look at photos, try to jog his memory, but then he finds out she's in with some young radical Muslim people, who apparently plan to do violence at a peaceful protest in Paris. His attempt to stop her failed. Martin is desperate to reach her before she gets there, asks for Tony's help once again.
In the 2001 scenes, Dmitry is shown as a successful businessman but the FBI & Czech Police are still investigating him after finding the body of his "associate." It's revealed that "Dmitry" is indeed a legend, and his MI6 bureau contact (the old man Graves whom Martin visited in the present) is concerned that he is pushing things too far outside the law for their investigation into a Chechen general wanted as a war criminal. Doku Zakayev is their link & Dmitry acts to protect his contact, Doku's brother, to get trust & further access into their mobster organisation.
In both the present & 2001, FBI agent Curtis Ballard pursues leads on "Dmitry." In the present he tells his former Czech Police contact Gabi that he thinks Martin is their missing link, and what crime he did when in America. She thinks Curtis should leave things alone, since the case was no longer official, but because of his own issues, he can't do that. But there is trouble waiting for him also.
In the 1975 scenes with "young Odum," he is again shown at The Sedley School, being taught another harsh lesson in life by the headmaster who favours him because he believes "Martin" has what it takes to be loyal to an institution rather than friends.
The episode ends in the present with Tony telling Martin he made a deal for him with MI6, to protect him from the FBI. But Martin doesn't want to hear it. He feels he needs to help Kate, has a responsibility to protect his "children."
"If I can't be there for Aiden, I'm sure I'm gunna show up for this girl!" Martin declares.
Then Tony helps by hiding him in the car boot to smuggle him into France.
Dmitry is another one of Sean's best characters yet! Love that Sean got major input into how the personality was developed & that in his own way, Dmitry is a good man. I have always liked Tony Rice, I really like Kate, too, and I'm finding empathy with Ballard, that he was put in such a bad position by his department. Not sure yet what to make of the "young Odum" scenes but it is plausible.

LEGENDS Episode 201 "The Legend of Dmitry Petrovich" Summary & Brief Review

Official synopsis: As the new season of this totally re-imagined show opens, Martin Odum (Sean Bean) is a fugitive, hiding out in present day London and wanted by the FBI for a crime he did not commit. He can't remember his life prior to an injury he suffered in the Iraq War, so he's searching for clues about his true identity with the help of CIA agent Nina Brenner (Kelly Overton). Meanwhile, in 2001, FBI agent Curtis Ballard (Steve Kazee) and his Czech Police partner, Gabi Miskova (Winter Ave Zoli), launch an investigation into a Russian gangster named Dmitry.
http://www.tntdrama.com/shows/legends/season-2/episode-1/the-legend-of-dmitry-petrovich.html

SPOILERS AHEAD!!

First off, I totally disagree that Series 2 is a reboot or re-imagination. It is a direct continuation of the story started in Series 1, except instead of being completely in the present day, it showcases 3 different time-frames: present day, 2001, and 1975.

These recaps will focus mainly on Sean Bean's legends & his interactions with other characters.
"Lies and bullshit. That's what my whole life's become. Maybe that's all it ever was." - Martin Odum

Basically, the story picks up where we left off, with Martin, who is blamed for the murder of the US FBI Director and is on the run in Europe, picking up what work he can. He is still puzzling the bits about him being the legend John Cameron, the Iraq war veteran duped & framed by Verax Corporation, who orchestrated the murder for which Martin is blamed.
Now in London, Martin still doesn't know who he really is, but at least he knows who his friends are, which includes a brief intimate liaison with the friendly cafe server and one lone FBI agent, his former partner Tony Rice (Morris Chestnut). Tony also believes Martin was framed when he was John Cameron (reported deceased), and that they need to follow that clue. Martin also asks about his family (wife Sonya & son Aiden from S1); Tony tells Martin that they were safe.
What this episode begins to dovetail in Series 2 and connect back to Martin in Series 1 is his time before Cameron's 2004 tour in Iraq, specifically 2001 when his legend in Europe was a Russian gangster named Dmitry Petrovich and he was being investigated by both the FBI- in particular, Agent Curtis Ballard- and the Czech National Police. In the present time, Ballard recognises John Cameron as Petrovich, and decides to take matters into his own hands, goes to Prague.
Another timeline in this episode is 1975 and begins by showing a lad at exclusive prep The Sedley School, in a situation where he is defying the schoolmaster and punished for it. It is suggested that this is young "Martin Odum" but his real name is not (yet) revealed.

In the present, Martin traces the Cameron lead to an old man who was being visited by a woman who had collected Cameron's benefits. But when he follows her to a Russian shop, she recognises him as Dmitry!
--------------------------------
#DONTKILLSEANBEAN still going strong!! Pretty exciting & intense start. I like all the new characters so far, they are interesting. Where is this all going now, with Martin's connection to the woman? Will Tony be able to help him?

LEGENDS Episode 110 "Identity" Summary & Brief Review

Martin discovers that Verax may be plotting an assassination, led by a mysterious figure named John Cameron. When Martin gets kidnapped while investigating, he's shocked at what he discovers regarding his own identity. This season one finale becomes a race against time as Martin/DCO track Cameron and uncover their plans to infiltrate the US Government.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!
Episode opens with flashback to how Sonya helped Martin in 2004. When last we left off Sonya was in a bad way, but she made it to the hospital. Aiden Odum has kicked arse in this. He goes with Tony while Martin & Crystal compare notes. She tells him about Operation Raining Fire, Martin tells her that he was there in Iraq with Verax, and that he's not Martin.
Spiller briefs DCO, has them look for John Cameron, who he says is plotting a domestic terrorist action. Verax is indeed plotting, but they plan to pin their action on Martin Odum via Cameron. Martin & Tony examine the safe house guys, Maggie finds infra-red tattoos on them via camera. Martin has one too! Spiller coughs up the info that they are Verax employee numbers, and Maggie tracks one.
Martin, Crystal & Tony go to check out the employee apartment, find a bunch of sniper equipment. Then Martin gets a call from "John Cameron." Martin is still trying to make sense of how all this fits together in his own mystery. Tony has the money they found tracked. It is found to belong to a cash shipment to Iraq, and turns out that was stolen. Verax nothing but a bunch of damn thieves. The traced call from Cameron leads to another location. Just like bread crumbs. Martin is nabbed again, and this time it's Verax that gets him. Tony Rice is getting tired of the crap. He wants to know who Martin really is, but Crystal can't tell him because she really doesn't know either.
Verax works Martin over and the truth regarding Verax finally comes out because Shaw, the CEO, can't keep quiet about it any longer. He is gathering info but also has to gloat about Martin being John Cameron. And finally Martin remembers it, and what happened. Shaw finished the job by doing a computer generated video of Martin that framed him for the murder of the FBI Director. Martin is left then to be picked up, the damage is already done. DCO knows it wasn't him but to no avail. They have made too many enemies. A Verax-friendly Senate Committee closes the DCO after inquiry. Spiller gets the Director job, which is what he wanted all along.
Martin Odum, blamed for the murder, is on the run. He still doesn't know who he really is, but at least he knows who his friends are.
(Hurrah!)
So, a lot of the truth is now known, Verax Corporation has won this round, and the DCO paid the price of knowing too much information. But the overall war is still on. Does Martin remain Martin Odum, or need to be someone entirely new? Is he really MI6 or was that just another lie attached to a legend? WHO IS HE REALLY? I think there's enough questions still remaining for a Series 2! It's Martin Odum's mystery & Sean's stellar performance that kept me watching every week. I really like the supporting characters of Tony Rice, Maggie & Aiden Odum too, and hope to see more of them. I didn't much like them but Nelson Gates & Sonya turned out all right in the end, and they are still in the picture.

Again, here's the final S1 survey for LEGENDS, I wrote them a ton that I thought might help develop a Series 2 for Sean's highly complex & interesting character that I think has a lot of potential yet.

LEGENDS Episode 109 "Wilderness of Mirrors" Summary & Brief Review

Martin escapes from the Saudi's interrogation only to learn that Sonya and Aiden have been kidnapped. In the process of tracking them down, he learns more about the connection between Verax, Arcadia and his own past.
http://www.tntdrama.com/videos/legends/season-1/episode-9/wilderness-of-mirrors.html

SPOILERS AHEAD!!
Martin was in a lot of trouble last we saw him as Sebastian Egan, he had been grabbed by the Saudis that his articles were targeting as being in collusion with Arcadia, corrupt. His objective was to find the true murderer of the Saudi prince & get Hami off the hook. Instead these guys were pummeling him to get him to admit he was an FBI agent & threatening to kill Sonya & Aiden if he didn't talk. That got Martin angry & desperate, in which he beat off & escaped his kidnappers.
Crystal & Tony find out that the bastards have taken Sonya & Aiden. Gates tells Martin, who has a present for DCO when he gets back. They use drastic tactics to get info out of the Saudi prisoner about Martin's family & identity, but he doesn't know. It's Maggie who uncovers the truth- Arcadia was bought by Verax, the government contractor that Dobson, Evans & McCombs had worked for in Iraq, and who had claimed that Martin did too. New target: Jason Shaw, former Green Beret, now Verax CEO. Martin confronts Gates & demands the truth, who tells him yes Martin did work for Verax & had been lying about his identity because of WITSEC, witness protection. Gates shows Martin the redacted file about Raining Fire, the disastrous Iraq operation of which he apparently was a part when he got hurt in 2004. Martin asks if his wife had been a part of it. Then he gets a text from Aiden. Smart kid!
Maggie tracks the cell signal & Martin, Crystal & Tony go off to rescue Sonya & Aiden. They do & put them in a safe house with Tony until Martin can get there. Crystal wants to know what's going on, but now Martin stalls her. DCO FBI bosses decide stuff that the agents don't agree with. Martin & Crystal go off in disgust. They want to know who leaked Martin's FBI identity. Crystal asks her father for info. Martin confronts the deputy FBI director Spiller. He tells Martin that Verax is rogue, bent on controlling government decisions, and shows Martin a photo that he says is John Cameron, their top agent. Martin eats it all up because he doesn't have reason to disbelieve Spiller. Yet.
John Cameron is supposed to know who Martin Odum really is. Therefore, Martin wants to find him. In the meantime, Verax is cleaning things up on their end, and they are coming after Martin next! He & Sonya do their best to hold them off but she gets hit. Martin tries to get her to come clean. She tells him that she was helping him in 2004 as a CIA agent & that he was MI6. WHAT??

That was an enormous amount of info to take in! What is Martin, or whoever he is, going to do now? How was he connected to Verax in Iraq? What sort of operation was Raining Fire? Will Sonya survive? Fortunately TNT decided not to make us wait & showed episode 10 immediately after. #DONTKILLSEANBEAN still going strong!!

Here's the final Series 1 survey for LEGENDS, the info from which I hope is used for a Series 2!!

LEGENDS Episode 108 "Iconoclast" Summary & Brief Review

Martin stays in legend as journalist Sebastian Egan to exonerate Hani Jabril and find the real assassins of Prince Abdullah. DCO is forced to pursue the investigation "off book," ultimately leading Martin into his most dangerous stand off yet.
http://www.tntdrama.com/shows/legends/season-1/episode-8/iconoclast.html

SPOILERS AHEAD!!
Both Martin & Hani Jabril are in a lot of trouble. A Saudi prince was assassinated on his watch & it now looks like Hani was framed for it by a State Department employee who was acting as an agent for an Arcadia oil rep who apparently works with the prince's cousin who wanted him dead. The DCO is being hit hard by it's superiors because this assassination of a Saudi national happened on US soil during their operation. They need to do something about this mess or get burned, and it's further complicated by Martin's FBI bureau status. Gates gets the go ahead to do whatever is needed to find out what really happened.
Martin isn't happy about having duped Hani as part of his undercover mission as Sebastian Egan, the journalist. She isn't happy about it either when she sees him as him and not Egan. Martin tells her that he won't let her get blamed. She doesn't believe him. Martin tells Gates he is really pissed off now.
Next, Martin & Tony are sent to investigate the apartment of the suspected real assassin. They find him dead with a bit of a hangup. Well, cripe! DCO uncovers some more info & Martin knows the dead government guy was likely killed by the same oil cartel people who killed the prince & wanted Hani dead as well. Maggie does a bit of a buzz over at Arcadia herself to get some more data on them.
With all the evidence looking like a conspiracy, Martin says it's time to pull out Sebastian Egan the journalist legend again, concoct a story to set up the conspirators... and use himself as bait. It's a really good story. Martin tells the State Department lawyer that his plan will work and... Egan gets nabbed. But the oil cartel isn't done yet. They know who Egan is... and show up at Martin's house!
WOW! Now that's a cliffhanger I didn't see coming! Quite a lot to resolve in next week's series 1 finale, which consists of the last 2 episodes 9 & 10. My biggest questions: Who is Martin Odum? What's Sonya & Gates got to do with it? Who killed McCombs, Dobson & the other Iraq war veteran? Does it have anything to do with Martin's "real" identity? Very glad to see Tony Rice & Martin paired again, I think they make a great team. Still not too fond of the Egan legend but it has served it's purpose, the power of the press! And I really like Maggie, she's been kickass with the technical & computer support. All coming to a head next week but really, all I ask is #DONTKILLSEANBEAN!!

LEGENDS Episode 107 "Quicksand" Summary & Brief Review

Martin returns to DCO after the events in Houston and is presented with a brand new case: someone is threatening to assassinate a Saudi Prince during a visit to Los Angeles. The investigation leads Martin and Rice to a beautiful and charismatic female rights activist named Hani Jabril. Her cause is just but will she cross the line and kill for it?
http://www.tntdrama.com/shows/legends/season-1/episode-7/quicksand.html

SPOILERS AHEAD!!
The episode opens with a dude testing a drone for nefarious purposes. At DCO, Martin is being grilled by his bosses for his "rogue" adventure which took him to Houston to seek answers to his own problem. He wasn't happy with the interrogation, or that the conclusion of his adventure had robbed him of another source. Crystal wasn't happy either. And Martin didn't like boss "friend" Gates telling him that the Iraq photo was doctored to put him in it, Gates all the while insisting that his & Sonya's story about Martin was the true one. It's a strong persuasive argument.
Despite reprimand, Martin & his legend is needed for another case, protection detail for a Saudi prince who is threatened because of his government's policy. He is teamed with new DCO member Tony Rice for surveillance, and they were surprised to find out that a clandestine dropoff contact is prominent human/female rights activist Hani Jabril. Later they take a closer look at her apartment for clues & find a peeping tom with diplomatic immunity. Martin isn't amused.
Martin decides that his fave legend Sebastian Egan, a scotch-drinking underground journalist, is what's needed to dig deeper to find out what's going on. Martin/Sebastian and Tony posing as a photographer have a closer look at Hani Jabril first through one of her speeches then at a reception afterward, feeling her out. They next find out she is supposed to be at a protest where the prince is going for his own summit, and finagle a come-along in guise of doing publicity for her documentary film. The prince's people don't suspect anything, a drone is deployed, and the episode ends on a rather explosive note for the prince.

I was definitely not OK with seeing a human/woman rights activist collude with those resorting to violence to send a message. I hope this was a mis-perception as violence never solves anything. I know Martin's latest legend Sebastian Egan is the fave of both Sean & character Martin but beyond drinking scotch, I'm not too impressed yet. I assume this episode was a cliffhanger & the real story will be revealed next week. The thing I DID love was pairing Tony Rice with Martin, I think they make a great team! Plus Tony will learn more about Martin, hopefully to fit pieces into his murder case & the underlying identity mystery. Don't trust Gates or Sonya and #DONTKILLSEANBEAN!!

LEGENDS Episode 103 "Lords of War" Summary & Brief Review

Official synopsis: Martin assumes the legend of Dante Auerbach, an international arms dealer known as the "Lord of War," in order to track the sale of VX gas and rescue kidnapped chemist Richard Hubbard. He makes contact with beautiful arms dealer Ana Paulanos, the right hand of a mysterious Chechen mobster known as "The Colonel." Martin develops a romantic entanglement with Ana as he gains The Colonel's trust - but does he trust him enough to trade him all the VX gas?
http://www.tntdrama.com/shows/legends/season-1/episode-3/lords-of-war.html

SPOILERS AHEAD!!
When we last saw him Richard the former Russian chemical engineer turned American chemistry teacher was dragging his heels at creating bad VX gas for the Chechen mobsters. As this episode opens, he is still stalling his captors in hopes of finding a lapse in attention in order to get his family out. He creates a distraction to try to do exactly that (I thought he should've melted the bad guy's face off) but his attempt fails.
Over at DCO (Division of Covert Operations), the team is preparing to support Martin Odum in his Dante Auerbach "Lord of War" legend. Crystal is still complaining about Martin's perceived unbalance, but neither her boss Gates nor the Big Boss Spiller feels he is unfit in the face of the big picture of city-wide annihilation and OK's Martin's cover continuation. Martin/Dante first goes to meet a guy Khalid in order to weasel info. He gets a lead, who turns out to be a Miss, not a Mister, Paulanos, Ana by name. Martin/Dante decides that the operation needs to have a closer look at her. He speaks to her at length. Deciding she is who they want to deal with, Martin/Dante also removes Ana's buyer from the picture and inserts himself. Later they find out Ana is their way to get to Yuri The Bad Chechen Colonel boss who has the VX gas.
There is also FBI Transportation Security agent Tony Rice, who won't let go of his suspicion that Martin had something to do with the Vet's death and that there is something fishy going on. He is told again to back off, both by his boss & by Martin's boss Gates.
Martin himself feels some more confusion in between his Dante forays, and goes to Sonya his ex-wife's house to ask some questions of her. She is concerned with his mental state. His son Aiden is glad to see him but disappointed again about weekend plans being canceled.
The DCO computer people finally get a signal that indicates where the VX gas and the kidnapped family might be. Crystal doesn't want to wait, heads the team that crashes the place, rescues the family, but... NO GAS.
In the meantime Martin/Dante is finally taken to meet Yuri, who doesn't quite believe his story about him being a buyer and asks him to test a chemical weapon product on a captive. Uh oh!

I think Dante is Martin's best legend yet! Dante Auerbach is everything I expected him to be, and I hope we see more of his slickness. Just #DontKillSeanBean!! As for the rest of the show, the plots in general, the other characters & such, I'm not so impressed. Exceptions are Mason Cook, who plays Martin's son Aiden Odum, I like the kid. I also like Morris Chestnut's Tony Rice, I could see him ending up as a partner to Martin if his inquiry doesn't go askew.

If you saw this episode of LEGENDS on TNT & liked it, please let them know what you thought in Survey #3: https://www.tvinnercircle.com/S.aspx?s=519&r=tSnpxI.exUy18h1JCV0O9w&a=957&fromdetect=1
